Once you try it, we guarantee that it will be one of your go-to recipes. Here’s how you can perfect this easy one pot dish at home:

  • Use your preferred cut of chicken in making this dish. You can also use frozen cuts, just remember to add 30 minutes to the total cooking time.
  • Sear the chicken if you’ve got the time. To do this, heat up a shallow pan on high heat. Add a drizzle of olive oil, then place the chicken pieces in the pan to brown for 2 to 3 minutes on each side. Browning them takes just about 10 minutes, yet it adds a lot of extra flavors!
  • If you don’t have tomato sauce on hand, you can use tomato paste all the way and still make a yummy creole sauce. Just mix 1 part tomato paste to 1 part water to compensate for the amount of tomato sauce needed.
  • Add jalapeno peppers, red chili pepper, chili flakes, or hot sauce if you want to make it spicy.
  • Lastly, turn it into a chicken Creole soup by adding 2 cups of chicken broth or stock. To thicken, add 2 tablespoons of cornstarch dissolved in another ¼ cup of stock. Let it cook for 10 minutes or until cornstarch has activated.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Creole sauce made of?

This is a tomato-based sauce flavored with bell peppers, celery, and onions. These three vegetables make up the holy trinity of Cajun and Creole cuisine. Its stock component is usually chicken stock. The common seasonings found in a creole sauce are cayenne, hot sauce, bay leaf, salt, and pepper.

Is Creole and Cajun seasoning the same thing?

Though Creole and Cajun seasonings are very similar that home cooks often use them interchangeably, these two have their own distinct flavor profile. Creole seasoning relies heavily on herbs like basil, oregano, thyme, and sometimes also parsley and rosemary. On the other hand, Cajun seasoning is spicier as it contains more pepper than herbs. It usually has black pepper, white pepper, smoked paprika, cayenne, and a couple of herbs. Taste the difference by trying this cajun fish and jambalaya pasta.
